TRAVELING LITTLE MORSELS

Everything you need to know about flying with a lap infant

Background

Did you know if you plan on flying with any children under 2, you can get free (or discounted) flights? Below, we’ll go over everything you need to know about flying with a lap baby

What is a lap baby?

Also known as a lap infant, this is a child under 2 who can fly for free on domestic flights and for a discount on international flights. They are not guaranteed a seat and in theory should be on your lap. Hence, lap infant.

How old is a lap baby?

To qualify, the child must be under 2 years old. Not 2 and under. Under 2. The day they turn 2, they do not qualify. We took a trip right before Carter turned 2 to take advantage of his free ticket. If you have a trip right around the time your child is turning 2, it’s worth considering moving it up! What if my lap baby turns 2 on a trip?

The flight back will need to be purchased at full price. There may be some exceptions but generally you will need to buy that leg. If you’ve been following along, you know that I love using credit card miles and points for flying and we’ve still rarely paid for full price tickets for Ellie.

Can my lap baby sit in an open seat?

Yes! An empty seat next to you is the dream. You can even put the car seat in the seat. If you’re flying an airplane where you select your seat, keep an eye on that seat map for open seats. When you get to your gate, speak to the agent to ask if they can help you find an empty seat next to you. It’s always worth asking. If there isn’t a seat, you can gate-check the bucket car seat and it will be ready for you when you land. Because of family boarding with southwest, if the flight has empty seats, this is the easiest airline to score a free empty seat. After the A-boarding passengers, families with children under 6 can board.

Do lap babies fly for free on international flights?

Typically it is not free. You must pay taxes and fees and 10% of the fare. If you are flying on miles, there are different options for infant award tickets. If you’re flying to the Caribbean, take a look at Southwest. They don’t charge a percentage of the adult fare, just taxes and fees.

Is it safe to be a lap baby?

The take-off and landing can be bumpy and any turbulence comes with risks. That said, it is pretty common to score an empty seat. If they are on your lap, I like using a carrier to strap them to you. Note that even with potential turbulence, it is safer to fly with a lap baby than drive anyway.

Do I still need a ticket and reservation for my lap baby? What about ID?

Yes you will have options for selecting them as a lap baby when booking. The airlines can ask you for ID to verify age. Note that in my experience, Southwest always asks when you check in, so bring a copy of birth certificate or passport.

How do I fly with a baby?? What do I pack?

See my airline post for more tips and tricks! Babies generally sleep a lot and always appreciate age-appropriate snacks and toys. Try to change diapers right before boarding to avoid having to do so on the plane.  You can do this!

Final Thoughts

Once your baby has their shots and everyone’s a little more functional with sleep patterns, flying while your kid is under 2 can be a great way to travel far and save money!
